Design Surgery-Decoration

It's at the front of a Victorian house, so double windows but north facing so only gets direct light in the evening. Floorboards have got a whitish finish and there's a dark oak wooden double bed. There's two big pine cupboards at one end that I'd like to paint but need a colour for the walls/cupboards.

Should I go dark? Or light? Contrast the cupboards?

It's been a pale insipid yellow since I moved in and I'm a bit worried that it'll stay that way unless I get help!!

  1. We’d stay fairly light on the walls, a nice warm grey would look good with the floorboards and bed. Sanderson do a good range of colours (try the Slates). You get more tonal depth for your money with Sanderson but you can also ask Leyland to match the colours with good results. If you favour browner tones, look at the Suedes – you could pick up the dark oak finish on your skirts and doorframes for added impact. Check out - www.sanderson-uk.com. Definitely worth getting samples pots and painting a large square of your front runners on to the wall before committing.

You could paint the cupboards in a darker hue of your chosen colour. It’s a restful space so you don’t want to go too mad on contrasts. You could also think about replacing the handles to funk them up a bit. www.frostdesign.dk do some cool designs. John Planck are their London distributor.

Painting will be easier than staining as you may struggle to get the pine to match the oak of your bed.
