Save the planet
Eco credentials are high on the list of most designers these days with sustainability being the watchword.
For coffee chain coffee@ we specified lights made from recycled coffee cups and introduced bamboo worktops to their counters. The lights added an individual stamp to the interiors whilst the quick growing bamboo, despite being shipped from the Far East, has a carbon footprint better than most.
There’s plenty of ways to do your bit. Going down the salvage route can be very satisfying. Toby’s Reclamation in Exeter has some beautiful large slate panels, which exude character and will add a wow factor to a bathroom or kitchen.
If it’s new design you want then buy local. Mark produces 80% of its furniture and lighting in Cornwall with the rest from the UK. Their policy of local sourcing reduces manufacturing miles and sustains and develops local craft skills. Co founder John Miller explains their philosophy. “We intend all our products to have a long life; we aim for timelessness in design, robustness in manufacture, and for products that will improve with age.”
Their award winning Net chair, inspired by fishing nets, is modern and innovative and has style to soothe your eco conscience.
